Where possible I have listed Places to stay, eating venues, interesting activities and how to get around whilst you are there. Check out the Regular events section for regular BBQs on offer and support your fellow aviators at another airfield. Also the updatedUpcoming trips section lists any planned trips we are hosting or others we know of are hosting and the Other activities and places of interest area lists events you may be interested in attending. If you have any recommendations, events or trips to add to this page then please let us know - we are happy to share the information.

updatedARKAROOLA trip -  TBC 17th - 20th September 2015 10:00 am departure from Strathalbyn (or your own departure point), fly to Yunta for lunch, then onto Arkaroola. The following day fly to William Creek via Marree and see if you can spot the Marree Man and take in the sights of Lake Eyre.  Then have a day of leisure or enjoy a  Ridge Top Tour, then Sunday fly home via Jamestown. Please advise Diana of your interest/intent asap via text or email.

updatedKangaroo Island (SA) - Antechamber Bay - TBA October 2015 - Chapman River Wines - Come and visit this delightful cellar door on Kangaroo Island with airstrip.  Food and shared platters available. Open 11-4.30 Thursdays to Mondays (Closed Tuesday & Wednesday: Winter closure July-August) contact: (08) 8553 1371  - Depart Strath of your own airfield 11:00am and depart Chapman River Winery approx 14:30.

Please register your interest ASAP for any of the events so you can be placed on the contact list and advised accordingly. At this point there may be some available at short notice (1-2 weeks) due to weather conditions and interest. If you would like to attend as a contributing passenger, also let us know... pilots are often looking for passengers willing to share the costs and enjoy the fun. In most cases additional costs also include buying your lunch and taxi fares into town where applicable.

Kingston SE DAY trip - updatedPlease advise interest - this is a regular day trip - 10:30 am departure from Strathalbyn (or your own departure point), fly to Kingston, SE along the coastline, short walk into lunch at the Crown Inn Hotel, then flight back home approx 14:30. Please advise Diana ASAP of your interest/intent, if you are flying with us, if you need a passenger, if you are a passenger looking for a ride, or a student wishing to do a navex (solo or dual) etc. 

Grampians and Naracoorte - TBA 10:00 am departure from Strathalbyn (or your own departure point), fly direct to the Grampians (YGMP) staying at the Asses Ears Wilderness Lodge and Quad bike riding (own cost) in the afternoon. Next day depart for Naracoorte and a potential trip into town for lunch, then a leisurely flight home. Please advise Diana ASAP of your interest/intent, if you are flying with us, if you wish to share cost/hire, wishing to do a navex, need a passenger, need a pilot, etc. All costs at own expense.

Loveday (Barmera), SA day trip - TBA 09:30 departure from Strathalbyn (or your own departure point), fly to Loveday, near Barmera (on VTC) to participate in a 4x4 trial event at Loveday 4x4 Adventure Park. Please advise Diana ASAP of your interest/intent, if you are flying with us, if you need a paying passenger, if you are a passenger looking for a ride, or wishing to do a navex etc. Food is available at the venue and loads of entertainment. Private strip - PPR, all responsibility assumed by PIC etc. Co-ordinates and other details provided on confirmation.

Other activities and places of interest  updated 02/04/15

Barossa Air Show - Family Fun Day - Rowland Flat, Barossa Valley.  This is on again on Sunday April 12th - lots of fun for all.

AQUAFEST at Goolwa Aquatic Club April each year. 11-12th April 2015.  Each year there is plenty of active participants and keen spectators. Make a weekend of it and enjoy the sights.

Kingston SE Flying Group Fifth Annual Fly-In January. Clubhouse facilities are available for camping for anyone who wishes to rough it in style! BBQ lunch on Saturday and Saturday night dinner at Lacepede Bay Motel & Restaurant.

Loxton Aero Club Fly In Apr 2015 - The 2015 biennial Fly In at Loxton is planned for Sat April 18th 2015. If you plan to go, book now! Guest Speakers: Marion McCall OAM (Poet, Pilot and Performer) and Howard Hendrick (WW11 bomber pilot) ). Workshops throughout the afternoon (topics to be announced, watch this space) and the very popular Hangar Dinner at the Airfield.

Holbrook YHBK NSW Fly-in & Jabiru FestivalNovember, 2015. The Jab-Fest is a new addition to the Back to Holbrook Fly-in and they aim to attract a large number of Jabiru owners and pilots to the event. An interesting range of speakers and forums feature. A courtesy bus is available for transport to and from Holbrook township for those wishing to stay in Holbrook overnight and the camping on the airfield is also available. Holbrook is 65 kilometres north of Albury, on the New South Wales - Victorian border, and 75 kilometres south of Wagga.

Places to stay updated 07/01/15

Arkaroola (SA) - YARK - Arkaroola Wilderness Sanctuary - Hosts Marg and Doug Sprigg - varying degrees of accommodation, from camping thru to family units, airstrips available at Arkaroola (YARK - N/S) and Balcanoona (YBLC - E/W), pick up from airstrips available, restaurant and bar facilities, plenty to do including walking trails, observatory and ridge top tours to name a few. AVGAS and MOGAS available.

Located only 14 kms (7 nm) north of the Clare township and only 10 minutes from the picturesque Clare Valley wine region is a new aerodrome. It accommodates a 17/35 compacted clay runway of 1200 metres in length and 18m wide which becomes a dry weather strip within 2 hours of rain. There is also a 600m long grass cross strip 09/27 available. The windsock is located opposite the taxi way.
Pickups and car tours can be arranged from the Aerodrome to explore the region so you are not stranded at the airfield.

Horsham (Vic) - YHSM - With 2 lovely wide and long bitumen runways and a short flight from the Grampians this is an ideal place for some civilisation and a refuel. AVGAS available - CARNET card, cash or cheque - contact Darryl for callout 0417 501 624 - Also a great little clubroom (near the bowser) which is open 24 hours with free tea, coffee, toilet and shower facilities.

Loxton (SA) - YLOX - Come and visit this wonderful Riverland town in South Australia. Check out the Loxton Tourist Office for all accommodation details and things to do in the local area. Loxton Aero Club Club rooms are open to all visiting pilots for refreshments and restroom facilities. Runways 17/35 and 08/26 - Fuel at Renmark

Naracoorte (SA) - YNRC - A lovely location south east, Naracoorte is a lovely quick flight of approximately 1.5 hours from Goolwa, Strathalbyn or Murray Bridge. The fabulous Naracoorte Caves are not far from town and a cab ride can be organised. The Naracoorte Aero Club has club rooms with coffee and friendly company. Point Cook (Vic) - YMPC - RAAF Base Williams - Fly or drive in and enjoy the Point Cook (Vic) RAAF museum. Hours: Tuesday to Friday: 10am–3pm Weekends and Public Holidays: 10am–5pm. To fly in contact the Airfield Manager on (03) 9395 1937. Airfield landing fees are waived for legitimate visitors flying in to visit the museum.

Pinnaroo (SA) - YPNN - There's not a lot at Pinnaroo, but if you want to go for a fly and stay overnight, the Pinnaroo Motel will collect you from the airfield. There is both a phone and toilet at the airfield. Contact details 08 8577 8261 or pinnaroomotel@bigpond.com - John and Cheryl Whalan. 
 

American River (Kangaroo Island, SA) - Muston Heights B&B - 2 bedroom (1 x double, 1 x twin), private airstrip with multiple runways (S 35°48 E 137°44), car hire available, awesome views, lovely hosts Judy and Dean Johnson - ring first to request permission to land. Goolwa (SA) - YGWA - Catch up with Geoff, Richard and Marty anytime for coffee, cake and a chat - 7 days. Sit and watch the parachutes enjoying the free-fall, helicopters in training, jets roaring and Jabiru's training. Note: Parachutes operations, right hand circuits (flight operations to the East of the airfield) - refer to ERSA for more detail. Car hire available. AVGAS, PULP and JETA1 available. PPR

Grampians (Vic) - YGMP - Asses Ears Wilderness Lodge - park your aircraft near your cabin, then enjoy 4WD tours, quad bikes, horse riding and of course fly to nearby places such as Stawell, Ararat, Portland, Naracoorte and more. Hosts: Caroline and Steve Price. Check out the stories page for a pictorial of our March 2010 visit and March 2012. Nice long grass strip - ring first to check landing conditions PPR.

Jamestown (SA) - YJST - Great for a stop over if you've been or are intending to travel north. Home of the Jamestown Air Show. Check out the Jamestown Events site for what's on.  AVGAS available - contact Robin 0428 823 491. Lovely bitumen strip.

Kingston (South East, SA) - YKIG - Another lovely beachside resort. Fly down, stay overnight or go down and back in a day. Lunch at the Big Lobster or one of the local service stations (great food) or the Crown Hotel and all walking distance from the airfield - Bitumen runway 02/20, grass 09/27.

Meningie (SA) - YMEG - Beachside and South East of Adelaide a beautiful spot for a short break. A cab can collect you from the airfield (0488 196 071) and there are a couple of motels in town to stay. Grass runways.

Orroroo (SA) - Bendleby Ranges set in the Flinders Ranges near Orroroo, shearers quarters accommodation available with e/w strip (S 32°21.432'  E 138°47.569'). They will collect you from the airstrip - Contact Jane on 08 8658 9064 or bendleby@bigpond.com. AVGAS available with prior arrangement. Internet access for downloading weather.

Temora (NSW) - YTEM - Home of the Temora Aviation Museum with regular flying dates and now the home of Natfly. If you are looking for accommodation the Temora Tourism site offers a number of suggestions. 

Tooradin (Vic) - YTDN - Right in the nook of the bay across from French Island, fly the local seaside then enjoy the excellent food at the Wings and Fins Seafood Restaurant Bar and Bistro 0418 363 877 or the hospitality at Aus Air Services and Tooradin Flying School - AVGAS available - credit card only.

Regular BBQ events updated 23/07/13

Broken Hill (NSW) - Every Saturday the Aero Club of Broken Hill members get together for at LEAST a coffee & a chat, but ANYTHING can go on!! Some members might choose to go on a tour of the close locality, while others might choose to go deeper into the outback..... . Don't worry, call on 40 members for advice, and even join them if they are heading out, it really is a unique experience, and with our advice, totally safe!! Contact Jim 0429 885 753 anytime to find out what they are up to on any given weekend!! Also... Tie down your bird at the tie downs on the airfield, and ring (08) 8088 2722, The Lodge Motel. Close to CBD, all room types for your budget, and if you ring them upon arrival, they will pick you up from the airport. (Plus they are really nice). We suggest all our students, friends, and visitors visit them, (best deals), and you are most likely to meet our "extended area locals" there, because it is so well known by them! (That way, you get the feel of our area for free!) Mention "Nesbit Flight Training" advised you!

Renmark (SA) - YREN - BBQ breakfast 3rd Sunday of the month. Riverland Flying Club. 8:00 am for 8:30 am start at the club hanger. A gold coin donation gets you sausages, bacon, eggs, coffee etc. You can then choose to fly to Loxton for dessert. Draw for all those present at the BBQ, with the winner getting a free half hour fight in the club J230. Fly it off yourself or with an instructor. Gawler (SA) - YGAW - BBQ 1st Sunday of the month - The Adelaide Soaring Club are looking to conduct a breakfast on a regular basis. The breakfast includes: Egg and Bacon Sandwiches, Cheese, Bacon and Sausage Omelettes, Bubble and Squeak and Ham steaks with Pineapple all for only $10 per person. Food is available from 9.30 am. Please email tvleech@bigpond.com if you intend to come to help us cater; as this is early days for us and we need to get an idea of numbers. Note: We have 4,500 ft on weekends, not 1500 ft

Latrobe Valley (Vic) - YLTV - Latrobe Valley Aeroclub have a BBQ every Sunday at 12 midday and also morning tea.
