This page lists places I have been to and investigated. There are places to stay (accommodation), things to do and how to get around whilst you are there. Also check out a regular BBQ on offer and support your fellow aviators at another airfield. Also listed are up and coming trips, so come and join us for a day, overnight or a few days. Travel and day trips planned in 2012
The following trips are planned for this year, lots of day trips and some 3-4 day trips... if you are interested in coming along... then let me know. If you are on your own and would like someone to travel with, let me know and we will see who we can pair you up with.
Tooradin - Date TBA - Planning to fly to Tooradin (Vic) with a stop over at Hamilton. Lunch at Wings and Fins Restaurant, a flight to Latrobe Valley and Point Cook fly in to visit the RAAF museum - Email me to register interest.    Grampians (VIC) 17-19 March 2012 - For those who have done this trip before they understand the beauty of being here at the foothills of the Grampians and the Asses Ears Wilderness Lodge. Come and join us with a flight to Naracoorte for lunch and the caves and then back for some quad bike riding. Email me to register interest.
 
Naracoorte, SA - YNRC - Sat BBQ - Come and join the Aeroclub on a Saturday for a fabulous feast BBQ - be on the ground by 12 noon $10/head - ph (08) 8762 1721 first to confirm numbers - AVGAS 24 hour Visa & Mastercard bowser - no landing or callout fees - 2 runways 08/26 & 02/20

  Southern Flinders Ranges (SA) - 2012 - ON HOLD - Aiming to stay overnight at Bendleby Ranges in the Flinders Ranges near Orroroo then onto Rawnsley Park Station 430kms north of Adelaide and overlooking the southern side of Wilpena Pound, ideally situated for exploring South Australia's beautiful Flinders Ranges - YRYK airstrip details (landing fees & permission applicable). If you feel like treating yourself you could enjoy a 1 hour balloon flight for $350 per person - Ground Cost: $TBA - $100/hd deposit required to confirm your place - Email me to register interest.

Arkaroola (SA) - YARK - Arkaroola Wilderness Sanctuary - Hosts Marg and Doug Sprigg - varying degrees of accommodation, from camping thru to family units, airstrips available at Arkaroola (YARK - N/S) and Balcanoona (YBLC - E/W), pick up from airstrips available, restaurant and bar facilities, plenty to do including walking trails, observatory and ridge top tours to name a few. AVGAS and MOGAS available.

 

American River (Kangaroo Island, SA) - Muston Heights B&B - 2 bedroom (1 x double, 1 x twin), private airstrip with multiple runways (S 35°48 E 137°44), car hire available, awesome views, lovely hosts Judy and Dean Johnson

Broken Hill (NSW) - Every Saturday the Aero Club of Broken Hill members get together for at LEAST a coffee & a chat, but ANYTHING can go on!! Some members might choose to go on a tour of the close locality, while others might choose to go deeper into the outback..... . Don't worry, call on 40 members for advice, and even join them if they are heading out, it really is a unique experience, and with our advice, totally safe!! Contact Jim 0429 885 753 anytime to find out what they are up to on any given weekend!!
Also... Tie down your bird at the tie downs on the airfield, and ring (08) 8088 2722, The Lodge Motel. Close to CBD, all room types for your budget, and if you ring them upon arrival, they will pick you up from the airport. (Plus they are really nice). We suggest all our students, friends, and visitors visit them, (best deals), and you are most likely to meet our "extended area locals" there, because it is so well known by them! (That way, you get the feel of our area for free!) Mention "Nesbit Flight Training" advised you!

Goolwa (SA) - YGWA - BBQ every Saturday $5/head ring 8555 4030 to confirm. Catch up with Geoff and the crew for coffee, cake and a chat. Sit and watch the parachutes enjoying the free-fall , helicopters in training, jets roaring and Jabiru's training. Note: Parachutes operations, right hand circuits - refer to ERSA for more detail. Car hire available from $50/day. AVGAS, PULP and JETA1 available.
 

 

Grampians (Vic) - YGMP - Asses Ears Wilderness Lodge - park your plane near your cabin, then enjoy 4WD tours, quad bikes and of course fly to nearby places such as Stawell, Ararat, Portland, Naracoorte and more. Gawler (SA) - YGAW - BBQ 1st Sunday of the month - The Adelaide Soaring Club are looking to conduct a breakfast on a regular basis. The breakfast will include; Egg and Bacon Sandwiches, Cheese, Bacon and Sausage Omelettes, Bubble and Squeak and Ham steaks with Pineapple all for only $10 per person. Food is available from 9.30am. Please email tvleech@bigpond.com if you intend to come to help us cater; as this is early days for us and we need to get an idea of numbers. Note: We have 4,500 ft on weekends, not 1500’
 

 

 Jamestown (SA) - YJST - Great for a stop over if you've been or are intending to travel north. Home of the Jamestown Air Show. Check out the Jamestown Events site for what's on. If you fly in a group, contact Robin (08 8664 1111) and arrange a BBQ lunch for your group. AVGAS available.

Kangaroo Island (SA) - Antechamber Bay - Chapman River Wines - Come and visit this delightful cellar door on Kangaroo Island with airstrip. Hosts Diana and Bruce will make you most welcome. Platters available for $18/hd. Open 11-4.30 Thursdays to Mondays (Closed Wednesdays-Thursdays: Winter closure July-August) contact: 08 8553 1371
 

 

Kingston (South East, SA) - YKIG - Another lovely beachside resort. Fly down, stay overnight or go down and back in a day. Lunch at the Big Lobster or one of the local service stations (great food). AVGAS available at the airfield - contact Dennis Bouchard 8767 2145 or 0408 813 501

Latrobe Valley (Vic) - YLTV - Latrobe Valley Aeroclub have a BBQ every Sunday at 12 and also morning tea.  

 

Loxton (SA) - YLOX - BBQ lunch every Sunday . Loxton Aero Club. An invitation is extended to all who wish to join during the year for morning local flying, followed by a BBQ lunch. For more info call the President Rod on 0428 846 904

Meningie (SA) - YMEG - Beachside and South East of Adelaide a beautiful spot for a short break. A cab can collect you from the airfield (0488 196 071) and there are a couple of motels in town to stay. Can recommend the fish and chip shop... so long as you are not in a hurry.

 

Naracoorte (SA) - YNRC - BBQ every Saturday. A lovely location south east, Naracoorte is a lovely quick flight of approximately 1.5 hours from Goolwa or Murray Bridge. The fabulous Naracoorte Caves are not far from town and a cab ride can be organised. The Naracoorte Aero Club has club rooms with coffee and friendly company. Orroroo (SA) - Bendleby Ranges set in the Flinders Ranges near Orroroo, shearers quarters accom available with e/w strip (S 32°21.432'  E 138°47.569').   Pinnaroo (SA) - YPNN - There's not a lot at Pinnaroo, but if you want to go for a fly and stay overnight, the Pinnaroo Motel will collect you from the airfield. There is both a phone and toilet at the airfield. Contact details 08 8577 8261 or pinnaroomotel@bigpond.com - John and Cheryl Whalan.

Point Cook (Vic) - YMPC - RAAF Base Williams - Fly or drive in and enjoy the Point Cook (Vic) RAAF museum. Hours: Tuesday to Friday: 10am–3pm Weekends and Public Holidays: 10am–5pm. To fly in contact the Airfield Manager on (03) 9395 1937. Airfield landing fees are waived for legitimate visitors flying in to the museum.

 

Renmark (SA) - YREN - BBQ breakfast 3rd Sunday of the month. Riverland Flying Club. 8:00 am for 8:30 am start at the club hanger. A gold coin donation gets you sausages, bacon, eggs, coffee etc. You can then choose to fly to Loxton for dessert. Draw for all those present at the BBQ, with the winner getting a free half hour fight in the club J230. Fly it off yourself or with an instructor. Temora (NSW) - YTEM - Home of the Temora Aviation Museum with regular flying dates. If you are looking for accommodation the Temora Tourism site offers a number of suggestions. Also Temora Flight Training are very obliging and offer lots of local knowledge.
 

 

Tooradin (Vic) - YTDN - Right in the nook of the bay across from French Island, fly the local seaside then enjoy the excellent food at the Wings and Fins Seafood Restaurant Bar and Bistro 0418 363 877 or the hospitality at Aus Air Services and Tooradin Flying School - AVGAS available - credit card.

Past Trips

Grampians - YGMP - 29th-31st May 2011 - DONE AND DUSTED- Come and join us at Asses Ears Wilderness Lodge for a few days. Enjoy Quad Bike Riding, Horse Riding and flights over the Grampians and surrounding areas. Fly in, park your aircraft outside your accommodation. Early morning and late afternoon flights are awesome - great photo opportunities.
No fuel available, however Stawell and Horsham are both close by for refuelling.
  Arkaroola (SA) - YARK - Sun 26th - Wed 29th June 2011 DONE AND DUSTED - Come and join us at Arkaroola Wilderness Sanctuary for a few days. Enjoy the Bats and Bubbly tour and a flight to William Creek for lunch - take the opportunity to fly the area of Lake Eyre or the Painted Desert. Also plenty to do on your own: Walking trails, Ridge Top Tour, Astronomy Evening or fly yourself over the village, to Lake Frome or even Cameron's Corner if you desire. Holbrook NSW Fly-in & Jabiru Festival - 5th & 6th November 2011 DONE AND DUSTED but there is always next year!!! - The Jab-Fest is a new addition to the Back to Holbrook Fly-in and they are hoping to attract a large number of Jabiru owners and pilots to the event. An interesting range of speakers and forums will feature, including a Jabiru factory representative to present the Jabiru trophies. A courtesy bus is available for transport to and from Holbrook township for those wishing to stay in Holbrook overnight and the camping on the airfield is also available. Robe (SA) - YRBE - After tasting the food at the Big Lobster at Kingston, I've decided and been advised a better venue would be Robe instead... only about 20mins further on from Kingston - fly to Robe, have lunch, and then fly home....

Lucindale (SA) - Sun 26th September 2010 - DONE AND DUSTED!  BBQ lunch fundraiser for charity at the Holmwood property of Annie and David Crawford was a great success with about 40 people attending - a good mix of GA and Recreational aircraft attended

Lake Eyre, top end (SA) - Done and Dusted - 4 days, 3 nights, staying at Muloorina Station... flights around the top end of the lake, see all that water and that wildlife... dates and itinerary to be confirmed. Read about our trip here and check out the Gallery page for additional pics.

Kangaroo Island (SA) -  1 day - Sunday 21st Feb 2010 - DONE AND DUSTED! Day flight to Antechamber Bay, (Chapman River Wines) for early lunch, then flight around the island including the south coast, Vivionne Bay and home.
5 planes, 10 people, a great day was had by all. Check out a couple of photos on the Gallery page.

 

Grampians (Vic) - YGMP - 4 days, 3 nights - Sun 28th - Wed 31st March 2010 - DONE AND DUSTED! Trip includes: 4-wheel drive tour, 2-hour quad bike ride, Naracoorte Caves tour, Stawell/Ararat, over and around the Grampians and other local areas.
